Review: Hotel Henri (Hamburg, Germany)

When on the road, hotels should try to deliver an outstanding experience whilst creating a cozy place people really feel home for the time being. Hotel Henri in Hamburg, Germany hits the spot by going back to the 50’s and a concept that’s both well executed and refreshing.

Located between the main train station and the city center, Hotel Henri is located right at the heart of the city, making the most sights easy to reach by foot or public transport.

The concept of the hotel spins around giving an experience of the 1950s. To hit the spot, original exponats from the era have been gathered from flea markets around Europe and selected by hand – and it was really worth the hassle. The whole hotel might as well be a scene out of “Mad Men“.

Staff

The staff proved to be really standing behind the concept and they offer a great feeling of being welcome as well as being very helpful in every regard. Whilst being professional, there is a friendly touch to it, without going over the edge.

Rooms

The rooms offer a cozy 50’s atmosphere whilst also reminding of Hamburgs maritime background, overall a very good match.

At the room, a capsule based espresso machine can be found. Four capsules are already present, further supply is being delivered by the room maid or can be received at the reception. The espresso pretty much beats systems like Nespresso, while also producing much more plastic waste. Yet, it’s a great way to have one or two espresso shots before starting the day. The also pre-supplied tea can be used with a water heater that can also be found within the room.

The bed itself I didn’t myself particularly notice, which might be the best compliment for both mattress and sheets.

Food & Drinks

This is a point where Henri really differenciates itself from both traditional and other themed hotels. The minibar is empty, and that’s supposed to be like that, although surprising at first. If one wants to enjoy a beer (great local selection), wine, other beverages or some snacks (including a fridge stuffed with Ben & Jerry’s), it can be found right behind the reception in the “kitchen”, which is also where the breakfast is being served. Around the kitchen and the reception, there are many desks and chairs to enjoy said beverages and snacks.

Overall, the atmosphere is really more enjoyable than in “common” hotels.

Bottom Line

Both for business and personal travel, Hotel Henri is a keeper. It offers the right balance between being cozy and professional whilst offering a unique, hand selected style, topped with great staff. Henri is cool, fun and enjoyable, so give it a try.
